What Is GSM?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter — the physical weight of one square meter of fabric. In microfiber towels, GSM is the most commonly cited specification, but it tells only part of the performance story.
The GSM Range in Detailing
| GSM Range | Feel | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| 200–260 GSM | Light, quick-drying | Glass, interior, final buff |
| 300–350 GSM | Medium weight, versatile | General drying |
| 400–450 GSM | Plush, high absorption | Drying large surfaces |
| 500+ GSM | Ultra-plush | Sensitive finish drying |
Why GSM Alone Is Misleading
A 400 GSM towel made from 70/30 polyester/polyamide blend performs differently from an 80/20 blend. The sweet spot: 70/30 or 80/20.
Matching Towel to Task
- Glass/Interior Towel (240–280 GSM, 80/20) — Lint-free, streak-free on glass and screens.
- All-Purpose Towel (320–360 GSM, 70/30) — The workhorse. Good absorption, versatile enough for all tasks.
- Drying Towel (400–450 GSM, plush) — Maximum water pickup. Plush pile traps grit away from paint surface.
